I think she originally got low grades because she didn’t want to apply herself to her work, not because she was unintelligent; sometimes otherwise “smart” people just aren’t very good at taking exams, or are generally poor students because studying disinterests them. I also think that’s one the reasons why she excelled at practicing psychology (well, prior to meeting Joker anyway). She likely found actual therapy sessions much more exciting than just mechanically reading words out of a textbook.
I think if she’d really wanted to, she could have earned an A without sleeping with her professor–she just wanted to do it on her own terms. That doesn’t make her dumb, it just makes her dishonest and somewhat lazy.
